The Region 10 Community Wellness Coalition was established in 2010 by a group of concerned community members to address underage drinking and its associated risk factors within the towns of Harwinton and Burlington. The coalition continues to be an asset to the community with strong support from the Region 10 School District administration and the First Selectmen of both towns.

  • It is AGAINST THE LAW to knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence, permit anyone under the age of 21 to illegally possess alcohol on private property you own or control.
  • This law applies whether you are aware, or unaware of the alcohol possession and/or consumption.
  • Failing to make reasonable efforts to halt such possession is punishable as a class a misdemeanor.
  • A class a misdemeanor is punishable by a maximum one year imprisonment, or up to a $2000 fine.

HOW TO TALK ABOUT RESPONSIBLE DRINKING

  • Set clear expectations about substance use in your home.
  • Make it a conversation, not a lecture. Show them that you care.
  • Discuss strategies on how to identify, and deal with peer pressure.
  • Promote safe alternative activities.
  • Model safe and responsible behavior.

THE DANGERS OF UNDERAGE DRINKING

  • Alcohol has harmful effects on youth, particularly impacting brain development.
  • Drinking can negatively influence critical thinking and judgment, leading to an increase in risky behavior and risk-taking.
  • Underage drinking increases the risk of using other drugs and developing an addiction.
